Practical Nursing Program

The Practical Nursing program is scheduled with 15 week semesters and will start every semester or three times a year. The student can choose to be full-time student or part-time student.   The Practical Nursing program is 3 semesters (1 year) for full-time students and 6 semesters (2 years) for part-time students. 

Work Setting:  Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) work in a variety of settings, including nursing and residential care facilities, hospitals, physicians’ offices, and private homes.  LPN’s most frequently work under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse or Physician.

  • Total Hours: 1357.5

  • Expected Length: 3 Semesters (6 Semesters if part-time)

  • Degree issued: Practical Nursing Diploma.

The Practical Nursing program provides students with an introduction to the nursing field.

A Practical Nurse works with patients in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will complete clinical rotations during the program in a variety of healthcare settings where the skills learned will be applied in real-life situations. If the Practical Nurse is working in a hospital or long-term care facility, they will most likely work 10 or 12 hour shifts while providing complete patient care to a group of patients.  Some of the care skills that will be used for total patient care and learned in this program are medication administration, bathing, bed-making, daily grooming, feeding, ambulating or transferring patients, comforting, taking vital signs, and following care plans to meet the patient needs.  

At the completion of this program, the student will be ready to take the licensure exam (NCLEX-PN).

Practical Nursing Program Goals

  • Use evidence-based practice knowledge to competently, safely, and effectively deliver quality care to meet the predictable needs of patients across the lifespan according to the Nurse Practice Act.

  • Create therapeutic communication and relationships with patients and their families that shows compassion, caring, and respect.

  • Practice as a collaborative team member of the inter-professional healthcare team.

  • Use the nursing process for critical thinking and clinical judgement while making decisions within legal and ethical parameters at the same time as working within the scope of their practice.

  • Continue to use resources, ask questions, learn from others, and use self-reflection to evaluate their nursing effectiveness and grow as a nurse throughout their lifetime.

  • Meet the education requirements of the Florida Department of Health, Board of Nursing to be eligible to take the licensing PN-NCLEX exam.

Practical Nursing Courses

All Practical Nursing class/lecture and lab will be taught on campus.  Clinicals will be off site at healthcare settings.
