Medical Assistant Program

The Medical Assistant program is scheduled with six 6-week terms and will start every six weeks or eight times a year. The student can choose to be a full-time student with two courses per term or a part-time student with one course per term.   The full-time Medical Assistant program is 36 weeks in length or part-time at 78 weeks. 

Work Setting:  Medical Assistants work in physician offices, labs, or insurance or medical billing offices.

Medical Assistants work under the direction of healthcare providers such as Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians. They prepare patients for the providers to see, take vitals, give immunizations, draw blood, do EKGs, as well as schedule appointments, check patients in, manage insurance authorization, or complete billing and coding. Medical Assistants frequently work with many different patients in a day. They most likely will work 8 hour shifts during the weekday while the office is open. At the completion of this program, the student will be ready to take the certification exam.

Medical Assistant Program Goals

  • Demonstrate competency of clinical procedures such as obtaining vital signs, phlebotomy, performing laboratory tests and procedures, sterilizing instruments.

  • Apply critical thinking skills to clinical situations.

  • Demonstrate competency in basic office administrative techniques such as office management, basic billing and coding and medical ethics.

  • Maintain regulatory compliance by understanding HIPAA and other regulations.
